Marcus is the curator of the HOWARD COUNTY CENTER OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE, which will have its Re-opening event on February 15 in Columbia, MD. Teaching our history and having information about leaders who may or may not look like us, helps us towards this goal. Creating an inclusive, equitable environment for the students of Howard County is imperative.
It is so important for all of us to hear these stories because representation matters. Marcus Nicks led the training and shared information and facts with us about Howard County’s history and the numerous African American leaders and trailblazers we don’t hear often enough about. The topic was Healing Through History-Understanding history, connecting to the past, shaping the future: The untold stories of African Americans in Howard County. This past Sunday we had our February training. Ohana has a dual mission: To empower students to overcome barriers and achieve self-defined success and to Build Community by developing relationships with people who are outside our normal social circles.Įach month, OhanaHC offers a training for mentors, to provide additional resources and information to help us in our relationships with our students. I am a volunteer with Ohana of Howard County, an organization that provides group mentoring to high school students in Howard County (Maryland).
